Marana Pool Ideas: Gladden Farms, Dove Mountain & More

By Carlos D7 min read

The best pool for a Marana home depends on the lot. Newer subdivision yards, like many in Gladden Farms, usually suit compact pools with a tanning ledge and a raised feature wall. Larger and sloped lots in Dove Mountain open the door to raised edges, view-facing spas and fire features. Established yards in Continental Ranch often call for designs that work around mature trees, older walls or an existing pool.

We build pools all over Marana, and no two backyards are the same. This guide shares design ideas by lot type, plus tips on HOA approval and Town of Marana permits. If you want an overview of choosing a pool builder in Gladden Farms, see our earlier Gladden Farms pool builder guide. This post focuses on the design itself.

Pool ideas for Gladden Farms and newer Marana subdivisions

Gladden Farms is a master-planned community in Marana, north of Tangerine Road near I-10. Like many newer neighborhoods in the area, a lot of homes have compact, flat backyards with block walls and a covered patio.

These yards are a great canvas for a well-planned pool. Ideas that work well:

  • A geometric or freeometric pool that lines up with the patio cover and the back wall, so the yard feels organized.
  • A tanning ledge near the patio so it gets afternoon shade from the cover, or add an umbrella sleeve.
  • A raised back wall with a sheer descent or scuppers. It adds height, sound and a little privacy from neighbors’ two-story windows.
  • A spool or plunge pool if you want to keep room for turf or a play area. See small pools, plunge pools and spools.
  • Turf or desert plants around the deck to keep upkeep low.

Plan for access and equipment

On many newer lots, the only way into the backyard is a narrow side yard. Because we own our own excavation equipment, we can plan the dig around your access. We also find a spot for the pool equipment that meets setbacks and is not right under a bedroom window.

Pool ideas for Dove Mountain homes

Dove Mountain is a large master-planned community in Marana, set in the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains. Many homes have bigger lots, desert views and natural terrain, and some sit on slopes.

These yards invite a different kind of design:

  • Face the view. Put the spa or a seating ledge where you can look out at the mountains or city lights.
  • Use the slope. A sloped lot can support a raised pool edge, a spa set higher than the pool, or a pool wall finished in stone. These take careful engineering, but they look great.
  • Blend with the desert. Freeform and freeometric shapes, natural stone coping, boulders and native plants help the pool feel like part of the land.
  • Add fire. Evenings in the foothills can cool off fast outside of summer. Fire bowls on the pool edge or a fire pit nearby extend the season. We use Luxe fire bowls. See our pool water features guide.
  • Plan lighting carefully. Some neighborhoods value dark night skies. Warm, low-glare deck lights and well-placed pool lights let you enjoy the pool without lighting up the hillside.

Hillside and rocky lot tips

  • Expect grading, retaining walls and drainage design to be part of the plan.
  • Rock and caliche can show up in many Southern Arizona yards. Owning our own heavy equipment helps us handle tough digging. Read building a pool in caliche.
  • Plan where storm water goes during monsoon season so it does not run into the pool or toward the house.

Pool ideas for Continental Ranch and established Marana yards

Continental Ranch was Marana’s first master-planned community, and it is one of the largest. Many yards here are well established, with mature trees, older walls and landscaping that has filled in over the years. Some homes already have a pool.

Building a new pool in a mature yard

  • Work around trees. A good design keeps the pool away from large root zones and out from under messy trees, or plans for them to come out.
  • Use what is there. An existing patio or shade tree can become the starting point for the layout.
  • Check older utilities. Older yards may have irrigation, gas or electrical lines in unexpected places. We look for these during our site visit.

Updating an existing pool

If you already have a pool, a remodel may make more sense than a new build. Common upgrades include:

  • A new interior finish (we use StoneScapes Mini Pebble)
  • New waterline tile and coping
  • A tanning ledge or bench added during the remodel
  • New Pentair equipment, LED lights and automation
  • Water features like scuppers or a sheer descent

HOA approval tips for Marana pools

Most master-planned communities in Marana have HOAs, and most HOAs require architectural approval before you build a pool. We cannot speak for any one HOA’s rules, but these tips help with most of them.

  1. Read your HOA’s architectural guidelines first. Look for rules on pools, walls, equipment placement, lighting and materials.
  2. Ask what they need to see. Many want a site plan with the pool location and distances to property lines. Some ask for materials and colors.
  3. Submit early. HOA review can take time. Start while you are finalizing the design.
  4. Think about the neighbors. Equipment noise, raised walls and lighting are common topics. Planning for them up front makes approval smoother.
  5. Plan for construction access. If your access means taking down part of a wall or using a common area, ask the HOA how to handle it.

Town of Marana pool permits

The Town of Marana requires a permit for pools and spas. According to the Town’s guidance, only small prefabricated pools that are less than 18 inches deep and installed entirely above ground are exempt. A custom in-ground pool will need a permit, plans and inspections during the build.

The pool also needs a barrier that meets Arizona and local rules. For more detail, read our pool permits guide and Arizona pool barrier and fence rules.

We handle permits and inspections for every pool we build, so you do not have to chase paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to build a pool in Marana?

Yes. The Town of Marana requires a permit for in-ground pools and spas. Its guidance exempts only small prefabricated pools that are less than 18 inches deep and installed entirely above ground. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections for the pools we build.

Do I need HOA approval for a pool in Gladden Farms or Dove Mountain?

If your home is in an HOA, plan on submitting your pool plans for architectural review before work begins. Each HOA has its own guidelines and process, so read yours early. Approval usually needs to be in hand before construction starts.

Can you build a pool on a hillside lot in Dove Mountain?

Sloped lots can work very well for pools, but they take more planning. Retaining walls, raised pool walls, drainage and equipment placement all need to be designed around the grade. A 3D design helps you see how the pool will sit on the slope before you commit.

How long does it take to get a pool built in Marana?

Timing depends on HOA review, permit approval, design choices and weather, including monsoon storms. Once digging starts, many builds move along steadily with our in-house crews. Our timeline guide covers each stage in detail.

What size pool fits a newer Marana subdivision lot?

Many newer lots in Marana have compact backyards, so a pool in the small-to-medium range is common. The real answer depends on your setbacks, patio cover, equipment location and access. We measure on site and design to what actually fits.

Can I update an older pool in Continental Ranch instead of building new?

Often, yes. If your home already has a pool, resurfacing, new tile and coping, updated equipment and added features can make it feel new. We can look at the existing pool and tell you whether a remodel or a new build makes more sense.
