Pool Resurfacing & Remodeling in Tucson: Signs It's Time

By Carlos D6 min read

It is time to resurface your pool when the finish feels rough, shows stains or etching that won’t clean off, or has hollow and flaking spots. Cracked tile and loose coping are other common signs. In Tucson, a resurface is also the perfect time to remodel, so you can add a tanning ledge, a spa, new tile, a cooler deck and modern equipment while the pool is already drained.

Here is what to look for, what a remodel can include, and how the process works.

What are the signs a pool needs resurfacing?

Rough surface

Plaster starts smooth and wears down over time. If the floor scratches feet or snags swimsuits, the top layer is wearing away. Rough plaster also gives algae more places to hold on.

Stains that won’t come out

Metal stains, organic stains from leaves and dirt, and dark blotches can build up over the years. Some come out with treatment. When they keep coming back, or the color looks patchy and mottled, the finish may be near the end of its life.

Etching and pitting

Etching looks like a dull, grainy, or pitted surface. It happens when water is aggressive, often from low pH or low calcium over time. In Tucson, where water evaporates fast and gets topped off often, chemistry can swing quickly.

Scale buildup

Hard water leaves white or gray calcium scale, especially at the waterline and on steps. Heavy scale that has built up for years can be hard to remove without harming the finish.

Delamination, hollow spots and flaking

If you tap the surface and hear a hollow sound, or see chips and flakes peeling off, the finish is separating from the shell. This is called delamination. It usually spreads and should be fixed before it gets worse.

Cracked tile, loose coping and deck problems

Waterline tile can crack or pop off, and grout can wash out. Coping, the edge cap around the pool, can loosen or crack. Older cool-deck can get stained and worn. These are often fixed as part of a full remodel.

How often should you resurface a pool in Arizona?

There is no single answer, but finish manufacturers give useful ranges. The table below compares the three main options.

Finish Typical lifespan reported by manufacturers Feel Good fit for
Plaster About 5 to 15 years Smooth when new, roughens with age Lowest upfront cost
Quartz About 7 to 15 years Smooth with slight texture More color choice than plaster
Pebble 20+ years with good water care Textured, rounded stones Long life in heat and hard water

Our heat, strong sun and hard water can push a finish toward the shorter end of its range if the chemistry is not steady. Many homeowners who resurface choose pebble so they are not doing it again soon. Our guide to pebble vs plaster vs quartz goes deeper on each finish. We use StoneScapes Mini Pebble from NPT on our projects.

Do you need a resurface or a full remodel?

A resurface replaces the interior finish and usually the waterline tile. It fixes a rough, stained or flaking surface and makes the pool look new again. If you like your pool’s shape and size and your equipment still runs well, this may be all you need.

A full remodel goes further. It can change the layout, add features, replace the deck and update the equipment pad. It makes sense when the pool no longer fits how your family uses the yard, when the deck is hot and cracked, or when the pump, filter and lights are near the end of their life.

Many projects land in between. A good starting point is to list what bugs you most about your pool today, then decide which fixes are worth doing while it is drained.

What can you add during a pool remodel?

Since the pool is drained and the crew is on site, a resurface is the best time to make bigger changes. Popular upgrades in Tucson include:

  • Tanning ledge (Baja shelf). A shallow area for loungers, kids and dogs.
  • Water features. Sheer descents, deck jets, bubblers, scuppers and Luxe fire bowls.
  • A new or raised spa. Built onto the existing pool, with spillover into the pool.
  • New tile and coping. Fresh waterline tile from NPT, Aquabella or Bedrosians, and new coping.
  • Travertine or other cooler decking. A big comfort upgrade on hot afternoons. See our post on decking materials that beat the heat.
  • Equipment upgrades. A Pentair variable-speed pump, new filter, heater or heat pump, and sanitizer options like salt or ozone.
  • LED lighting. Color LED pool lights are more energy efficient than older incandescent lights and can run on a schedule.
  • Automation. Control pumps, lights, heat and features from your phone.
  • Layout changes. New steps, benches or a reshaped entry.

If you want to swim longer into fall and spring, a remodel is a good time to add heat. Our guide on heat pump vs gas vs solar pool heating explains the options.

What are the steps in a pool resurfacing or remodel?

Every project is different, but most follow these stages:

  1. Inspection and design. We look at the shell, tile, coping, deck and equipment, then build a 3D design of the updated pool so you can see the changes before work starts. You can walk through it in VR.
  2. Permits. Some remodels, like adding a spa, changing the shell or running new gas and electrical, need a permit. We handle permits and inspections.
  3. Drain the pool. The water is pumped out following local rules.
  4. Prep the surface. Loose, hollow or failing finish is removed. The shell is cleaned and prepared so the new finish bonds well. Cracks are repaired.
  5. Structural and plumbing work. New ledges, spa walls, steps, water features, plumbing and lighting are added at this stage.
  6. Tile and coping. New waterline tile and coping are set by our in-house masonry and tile crew.
  7. Deck and hardscape. New decking, pavers or travertine go in if they are part of the plan.
  8. Equipment. New pumps, filters, heaters, lights and automation are installed and wired.
  9. Apply the new finish. The pebble finish is applied over the prepared shell.
  10. Acid wash, fill and startup. We acid-wash the pebble finish to expose the stones, fill the pool and walk you through startup.

When should you schedule a remodel in Tucson?

  • Fall and winter are popular. The pool is not getting much use, and the work wraps up before swim season.
  • Spring is busy because many people want to be swimming by early summer, so booking ahead helps.
  • Summer remodels are possible, but extreme heat and monsoon storms can affect how a fresh cement finish cures and can cause weather delays.

Starting the design early also gives you time to pick finishes, tile and deck materials without rushing.

How we approach remodels at Meraki Pools AZ

We are a family-owned, hands-on company, and we treat a remodel with the same care as a new build.

  • We design it in 3D first. You see your updated pool, with the new ledge, spa, tile, coping and deck, and walk through it in VR before we start.
  • Our own crews do the work. We handle excavation, steel, masonry, tile and decking in-house, and we own our excavation equipment.
  • We handle permits and inspections so you do not have to.
  • Quality materials. StoneScapes Mini Pebble finishes, Pentair equipment, NPT, Aquabella and Bedrosians tile, and Luxe fire bowls.

Frequently asked questions

How often do you need to resurface a pool in Arizona?

It depends on the finish and how well the water has been kept. Finish manufacturers report that plaster often needs resurfacing within about 5 to 15 years, quartz in roughly 7 to 15 years, and pebble can last 20 years or more. Tucson's hard water and summer heat can shorten those ranges if the chemistry is not kept in balance.

Can you resurface a pool without draining it?

No. A cement-based finish like plaster, quartz or pebble has to be applied to a dry, prepared shell, so the pool must be drained. The old surface is cleaned or removed, repairs are made, and then the new finish goes on before the pool is refilled.

Can I change my pool's shape during a remodel?

Often, yes. Adding a tanning ledge, changing steps, adding a spa or raising a wall are common changes. Bigger shape changes take more planning and may need a permit, so we design them in 3D first to see what your existing shell allows.

Is it worth upgrading pool equipment during a resurface?

Usually. The pool is already drained and the deck may be open, which makes it easier to add plumbing for new features, swap to a variable-speed pump, add a heater or install automation and LED lights. Doing it all at once avoids paying to open things up twice.

What is the best time of year to remodel a pool in Tucson?

Fall and winter are popular because the pool is not getting much use and the work can be done before swim season. Very hot, dry or windy days and monsoon storms can make it harder to apply and cure a new finish, so scheduling matters. Booking early helps you be ready by summer.

Can you put a pebble finish over old plaster?

In many cases a new pebble finish can go over a sound, well-prepared plaster surface. If the old plaster is hollow, flaking or badly delaminated, those areas need to be removed first so the new finish bonds properly. We check the shell before recommending the right prep.
