Shade is what makes a Tucson backyard usable from May through September. We build custom pergolas, ramadas and shade structures that fit your yard exactly, colored to match your home and welded on site. If you already bought a pergola, louvered roof or shade kit from somewhere else, we install it on concrete footings set in the ground and make sure everything around it, from the deck to the seat walls, conforms with it.
Because we also build pools, decks, Artistic Pavers patios, outdoor kitchens and landscaping, your shade is planned with the rest of the backyard instead of squeezed in afterward.
Custom pergolas, ramadas and shade structures
A custom shade structure is built for your space, not the other way around. We measure the area, check the sun path and plan the size and height in your 3D design. You can walk under it in VR before we build it and see how much shade it throws at 3 p.m. in July.
Custom steel structures are welded on site, so every post, beam and joint is fit to the exact dimensions of your patio, deck or outdoor kitchen. We color the structure to match your home, trim or the look you want, so it reads as part of the house.
Common custom builds include:
- Pergolas with an open or slatted roof that softens the sun and lets air move
- Ramadas with a solid roof for full shade over seating, a dining table or a grill
- Shade over outdoor kitchens and bar seating
- Poolside shade over a lounge area, tanning ledge view or part of the pool deck
- Free-standing shade out in the yard, connected to a path or patio
Already bought a pergola or shade kit? We install it right
Many homeowners buy a louvered pergola, aluminum pergola or shade kit from a store or online. The structure is only as good as how it is installed. We install shades you buy elsewhere, and we do it the same way we build our own:
- Concrete footings in the ground. Every post sits on a footing set in the ground, not just bolted to a thin slab or set on pavers. That is what keeps a shade structure secure in monsoon gusts.
- Everything around it conforms. We build or adjust the deck, pavers, seat walls, kitchen and landscaping so they line up with the posts and the structure looks planned, not added on.
- Placement that works. We help you place it where it shades what matters in the afternoon, without blocking views, pool access or the path of the sun you do want in winter.
You can see a louvered pergola our crew installed beside a new pool in our southeast Tucson pool project.
Why footings matter in Tucson
Monsoon storms bring sudden wind, and a pergola or ramada roof catches it like a sail. Shade structures that fail usually fail at the base. Setting each post on a properly sized concrete footing in the ground anchors the structure, protects the deck around it and keeps the frame square for years. We plan footings during design so they do not conflict with pool plumbing, gas lines for fire features, drainage or the equipment pad.
Shade planned with the whole backyard
Shade works best when it is part of the plan from day one. Because we design the whole yard in 3D, we place shade where it does the most good:
- Over the outdoor kitchen so the cook is not standing in the sun (outdoor kitchens)
- Beside the pool, so there is a cool place to sit between swims (custom pool construction)
- Over Artistic Pavers or travertine patios that would otherwise get hot (hardscaping and pool decks)
- Next to turf and play areas for kids (landscape design)
We also think about winter sun. A slatted pergola or a louvered roof you can open lets in warmth in January and blocks the hard sun in July.
HOA approval and the new Arizona shade law
Most Tucson-area HOAs review backyard structures. Since September 12, 2026, Arizona law says an HOA can no longer ban backyard shade structures outright, though it can still set reasonable rules on size, placement and appearance. Read our news story on the HOA shade law and our HOA pool approval guide. We prepare the drawings and 3D views your HOA asks for.
Our shade structure process
- Free on-site visit. We measure, check the sun path, access and utilities, and talk about how you want to use the space.
- 3D design. We place the structure in your 3D design, choose custom or kit, size, roof type and color, and you walk it in VR.
- Line-item quote. You get a written quote that shows the structure, footings and any deck, paver or kitchen work around it.
- Footings. We set concrete footings in the ground at each post location.
- Build or install. Custom steel is welded on site and colored to match. Purchased kits are assembled and anchored to the footings.
- Finish the space. We finish the pavers, deck, seat walls or landscaping around the posts so everything conforms.
