If your pool feels rough, looks stained or has spots that sound hollow when you tap them, the finish is worn out. Resurfacing puts a brand new interior on your pool. It is one of the biggest visual upgrades you can make, and in Tucson it is also one of the best ways to protect the shell from our heat and hard water.
Signs your pool needs resurfacing
- Rough surface that scratches feet or snags swimsuits
- Stains that come back after treatment
- Dull, etched or pitted areas
- Heavy white scale at the waterline and on steps
- Hollow spots, chips or flaking (delamination)
- Patchy, faded color
Any one of these can mean the finish is near the end of its life. Our post on pool resurfacing and remodeling in Tucson explains what causes each one.
What finish do we use?
People search for “pool replaster” or “pool plastering,” but these days most people in Tucson are better off with a pebble finish. We resurface pools with StoneScapes Mini Pebble from NPT. It is a pebble finish like the ones many people call “pebble tec.”
Why we chose it:
- Built for tough water. Pebble finishes resist staining, fading and wear better than plaster, which matters with our hard water and strong sun.
- Comfortable feel. Mini Pebble is smaller than standard pebble, so it feels smoother on steps, ledges and spa seats.
- Lots of colors. From white and light blue to gray, deep blue and black, so you can pick the water color you want.
If you want the full comparison of pebble, plaster and quartz, read pebble vs plaster vs quartz. We bring finish samples to your yard, since Arizona sun changes how a color looks.
Our pool resurfacing process
| Step | What we do |
|---|---|
| 1. Inspection | Look at the finish, shell, tile and coping, and talk about color |
| 2. Quote | Written, line-item quote with any tile or coping work listed separately |
| 3. Drain | Pump the pool down following local rules |
| 4. Prep | Remove loose, hollow or failing finish and clean the shell so the new finish bonds |
| 5. Tile and coping (optional) | New waterline tile and coping set by our in-house crew |
| 6. Apply finish | StoneScapes Mini Pebble applied over the prepared shell |
| 7. Acid wash | Expose the pebbles so the true color and texture show |
| 8. Fill and startup | Fill the pool and walk you through the first weeks of care |
The first few weeks after a new finish matter. We show you how to brush, when to add salt or run a cleaner, and how to keep the water balanced while the finish cures.
What to expect while we resurface
Resurfacing is not a weekend project, but it is far less disruptive than a new build. The pool will be empty for a while, and our crew will need access to the backyard and a spot to stage materials. We protect the deck and coping while we work, and we keep you posted on each step.
Weather matters here. Extreme heat, wind and monsoon storms can affect how a fresh cement finish goes on and cures, so we plan around the forecast. Fall, winter and early spring are popular times to resurface in Tucson for that reason, and because you are not giving up swim season. If you want to be swimming by summer, reach out early.
How much does it cost to resurface or replaster a pool in Arizona?
We do not post a flat price because pools vary so much. These are the things that move the number:
- Pool size and shape. More surface area takes more material and labor. Spas, benches and ledges add surface too.
- Prep work. A sound surface needs less prep than one with large hollow or flaking areas.
- Finish choice. Pebble costs more than basic plaster up front, but it usually lasts longer, so you resurface less often.
- Tile and coping. Replacing them at the same time adds cost but saves opening things up again later.
- Add-ons. Some people turn a resurface into a bigger pool remodel with a new ledge, spa or deck.

Make the most of a drained pool
Your pool is empty, and that does not happen often. It is a good time to:
- Replace waterline tile and coping. See pool tile and coping replacement.
- Replace a cracked or hot deck with travertine or pavers. See pool decks.
- Add a tanning ledge, bubblers or a water feature.
You do not have to do any of these. We will lay out the options and the cost of each so you can decide.
Why Tucson homeowners choose Meraki for resurfacing
- Family-owned and hands-on. The owners are on the job.
- Licensed. AZ ROC #342505 and #352797.
- We build concrete pools. Concrete pools are all we build, so we know what a shell needs before a new finish goes on.
- In-house tile and masonry. Tile and coping are done by our own crew.
- Clear quotes. Written and line by line.
One note: we are not a repair or service company. We do not do leak detection or crack repair. If your pool is losing water, have a repair company check it before you resurface.
Where we work
We resurface pools across Tucson, the Catalina Foothills and Rita Ranch, plus Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, Green Valley and SaddleBrooke.
