The deck is the part of your pool you use every day, even when you are not swimming. In Tucson, an old deck tends to crack, stain and get too hot to walk on by June. We fix that by taking the old deck out and putting in travertine or pavers that look good and feel better underfoot.
Signs your pool deck needs to be replaced
- Cracks that keep growing or trip people up
- Sunken or lifted sections
- Peeling or worn-out deck coating
- Stains that will not clean off
- A surface that is too hot for bare feet in the summer
- Gaps between the deck and the coping
Pool deck resurfacing vs replacement
A lot of people search for “pool deck resurfacing.” Usually that means painting or coating the old concrete. We do not do that. We replace the deck.
Here is why. A coating sits on top of the old slab. If the slab is cracked or settling, those problems tend to come right back through. When we tear it out, we can fix the base, set the grade so water drains away from the pool and the house, and install a deck built to last.
| Option | What it is | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Coating or paint (we do not offer) | New topping over the old concrete | Covers the surface; old cracks and settling stay underneath |
| Travertine (we install) | Natural stone pavers on a new base | Comfortable underfoot, grippy when wet, natural color |
| Pavers (we install) | Manufactured pavers on a new base | Uniform look, many colors and patterns |
Travertine pool decks
Travertine is the most popular pool deck we install in Tucson, and for good reason. It stays more comfortable on bare feet than many surfaces, it has texture for grip when wet, and the natural color variation fits the desert. Lighter tones tend to feel cooler. We cover why it works so well in our post on decking materials that beat the heat.
Travertine also makes great coping, steps and raised wall caps, so the whole pool area can match.
Paver pool decks
Pavers are a strong choice if you want a clean, even look. They come in many colors, sizes and patterns, like herringbone or a running bond. Pavers around a pool work well with modern homes and pair nicely with turf strips and planters.
Either way, you see samples in your yard first, and we can show the new deck in a 3D design.
Pool deck ideas for Tucson backyards
A new deck does not have to be a plain slab of stone. A few ideas that work well here:
- Turf strips between pavers or travertine. They break up a big hard surface and add a little green.
- A wider deck where you lounge. Leave more room on the sunny side for chairs and an umbrella.
- Matching coping and steps. One material from the house to the water looks clean and finished.
- A patio that ties in. Run the same travertine or pavers under the covered patio, around a fire pit or up to an outdoor kitchen.
- Lighter colors in full sun. They tend to feel cooler on bare feet.
We can show any of these in a 3D design so you can see the layout before we pull out the old deck.
Our pool deck replacement process
- Site visit. We measure the deck and look at coping, drainage and access.
- Pick materials. Travertine or pavers, color, pattern and edge style.
- Line-item quote. A written quote that shows each part of the job.
- Tear-out. Our crew removes the old deck and hauls it away, using our own equipment.
- Base prep. We grade and compact the base so the new deck stays flat and drains right.
- Install. Our hardscape crew lays the deck, steps, walkways and any new coping.
- Finish details. Joints are filled, edges are cleaned up, and the area is ready to use.
How much does pool deck replacement cost in Tucson?
We price each deck after we see it. The main cost drivers are:
- Square footage. Bigger decks and patios take more material and labor.
- Tear-out. How much old concrete has to come out and be hauled off.
- Material. Travertine and pavers vary by size, color and pattern.
- Coping, steps and walls. Matching coping, steps and raised wall caps add to the job.
- Access. Tight side yards take more time.
Our pool cost guide explains how materials affect price. Financing is available through Lyon Financial and Credit Union West on our financing page.
Finish the whole backyard
A new deck is a great time to tie the rest of the yard together. We also do turf, landscaping and irrigation, outdoor kitchens and BBQ islands, and block walls and pool barrier walls. If your coping or tile is tired too, see pool tile and coping replacement, or go all in with a pool remodel.
Sofia B. described her project in a Google review: “We redid our entire yard from turf, travertine, plants and irrigation, the pool, waterfall, heater and salt system.”
