How Long Does It Take to Build a Pool in Tucson?
Building a custom pool is exciting... but also a process with many moving parts. At Meraki Pools AZ, we want you to be informed from Day 1. Here’s a realistic timeline for building a pool in Tucson — what we do, and what factors can speed things up (or slow them down).
Typical Timeline: 8–12 Weeks from Excavation to Fill (Permits + Design Add Time)
Design & Planning
First, we’ll meet to discuss pool size, shape, features, finish, decking, water features, etc. Once your vision is confirmed, we create a 3D render so you can see what your backyard will look like. Adjustments here can add time.Permitting (Time May Vary)
Tucson/Marana/Oro Valley area requires permits, HOA approvals. Some jurisdictions are faster than others. If plans are complete, we get approvals in about 2‑4 weeks on typical builds.Excavation & Site Prep
Digging the hole, grading, adjusting for slope & access. If you have rocky soil, caliche, or limited access, prep can take longer.Steel, Plumbing, Electrical
Installing rebar/steel framework, plumbing lines, drains, electrical for lights/water features etc. Inspections often required at this stage.Shell (Gunite/Shotcrete) Installation & Cure
Pouring the pool shell (shotcrete or gunite), forming walls, floors, steps. After the shell is formed, it must cure — a few days to a week depending on weather conditions.Tile, Waterline, & Decking
After the shell cures, tile gets installed, coping finished, deck poured or installed (e.g. travertine, pavers).Equipment, Finish, & Start‑Up
Install the pool equipment (pump, filter, heater, sanitation system), interior finish (plaster, pebble, etc.), fill the pool. Start water chemistry, test features.
Factors That Can Change the Timeline
Permit Delays — Missing info, HOA reviews, or corrections requested by the city can add time.
Site Conditions — Rocky soil, caliche, limited access, needing additional excavation equipment etc.
Weather — Monsoon storms, extreme heat or rain can delay concrete work, decking, or curing.
Change Orders / Feature Complexity — Adding water features, custom masonry, firepits or pergolas mid‑build adds labor and time.
Supply Chain / Material Delays — Tile, decking, equipment parts sometimes delayed, which pushes certain steps back.
What You Can Expect Working with Meraki Pools AZ
Because we own much of our equipment (excavators, bobcats, etc.) and have a hands‑on design team in house, we are able to control many of the variables. We aim to hit fill‑up within 8–12 weeks after excavation for standard, “no extra complications” builds.
If you have custom features, hard-to-access yard, or special finishes, plan for a little extra buffer.
Quick Tips to Help Speed Up the Process
Approve your designs fast, so changes are minimized.
Make sure site access is ready (clear obstacles, ensure driveway/yard access).
Choose finishes and features early in the design phase.
Keep up with permit paperwork and quickly respond to any plan review requests.
