How we built this Marana pool with sheer descents

Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 4

Rebar and plumbing for the pool and sheer descents

After the dig, our crew tied a rebar grid across the floor and up the walls of the excavation. Plumbing for the returns and for the two sheer descent water features was run before the shell, sized so each sheer gets an even sheet of water.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 4

Travertine coping, mosaic tile and the water feature wall

Travertine coping was set along the edge of the shotcrete shell and mosaic tile wrapped the waterline. The raised wall that holds the sheer descents was built up and faced with tile, so the water features look like part of the pool design instead of an add-on.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 4

    Travertine pool deck

Our hardscape crew laid the travertine pool deck around the pool while the shell was still empty. Travertine stays cooler than concrete in the Arizona sun and gives the pool a warm, finished edge.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 4

Dark interior finish and first fill

The dark interior finish went on and the pool began filling beside the finished travertine deck. A dark finish turns the water a deep blue-green and helps the pool hold a little more heat.

    Finished

The finished pool and sheer descents

Filled, the dark finish gives the water a deep color, and the two sheer descents spill from the tiled raised wall. The sound of the water features is one of the best parts of this Marana backyard.
