Salt or Chlorine

When planning a custom pool in Tucson, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is whether to go with a traditional chlorine system or upgrade to a saltwater setup. Both work well, but each has benefits (and a few tradeoffs) — especially in our hot, dry Arizona climate.

The Basics

  • Chlorine Pools: Use added chlorine tablets or liquid to sanitize the water.

  • Saltwater Pools: Use dissolved salt and a generator to produce chlorine naturally.

Both kill bacteria — but the way they deliver sanitation is different.

What Works Best in Tucson?

Saltwater pools are often better suited for Tucson homes. Why?

  • The water is softer and less harsh on eyes, skin, and swimwear.

  • Less maintenance — no need to add chemicals as often.

  • Better for frequent swimmers and families who use their pool year-round.

  • Salt systems help balance out the effects of high evaporation and water hardness that we deal with in Southern Arizona.

But they do require a higher upfront cost and careful monitoring of pH levels.

Chlorine Still Has Its Place

  • Lower initial cost

  • Easy to shock after monsoons or high use

  • Good for pools with less frequent usage

Our Take at Meraki Pools AZ

We build both systems. For families who swim often and want softer, easier-to-manage water, we typically recommend saltwater. But if budget or simplicity is your focus, a well-maintained chlorine system still performs great in Tucson.
