Salt or Chlorine
When planning a custom pool in Tucson, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is whether to go with a traditional chlorine system or upgrade to a saltwater setup. Both work well, but each has benefits (and a few tradeoffs) — especially in our hot, dry Arizona climate.
The Basics
Chlorine Pools: Use added chlorine tablets or liquid to sanitize the water.
Saltwater Pools: Use dissolved salt and a generator to produce chlorine naturally.
Both kill bacteria — but the way they deliver sanitation is different.
What Works Best in Tucson?
Saltwater pools are often better suited for Tucson homes. Why?
The water is softer and less harsh on eyes, skin, and swimwear.
Less maintenance — no need to add chemicals as often.
Better for frequent swimmers and families who use their pool year-round.
Salt systems help balance out the effects of high evaporation and water hardness that we deal with in Southern Arizona.
But they do require a higher upfront cost and careful monitoring of pH levels.
Chlorine Still Has Its Place
Lower initial cost
Easy to shock after monsoons or high use
Good for pools with less frequent usage
Our Take at Meraki Pools AZ
We build both systems. For families who swim often and want softer, easier-to-manage water, we typically recommend saltwater. But if budget or simplicity is your focus, a well-maintained chlorine system still performs great in Tucson.
