How we built a pool in an established Tucson backyard

Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 5

Forms and excavation with tight backyard access

We set wood forms, made the first cuts and dug the pool with a mini excavator. In an older Tucson yard with block walls on every side, a compact machine and an experienced crew keep the walls, trees and landscaping intact.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 5

    Steel rebar for the pool

The rebar grid was tied inside the wood forms across the floor and up the walls of the excavation, built to the engineered plans for this pool. This pool has an in-floor cleaning system. You can see the extra pipes peeking up through the floor steel: each one becomes a pop-up cleaning head that pushes dirt toward the main drain, so the pool does most of its own cleaning in the dusty Tucson monsoon.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 5

Shotcrete shell with a built-in bench

The shotcrete shell formed the pool and a wide built-in bench at the shallow end, a comfortable place to sit in the water on a hot Tucson afternoon.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 5

    Travertine coping and waterline tile

Travertine coping went on around the shell, then waterline tile was set all the way around the pool, with the travertine deck finished around it.

  5. 05

    Step 5 of 5

Blue interior finish and first fill

Our crew applied the blue interior finish with the new travertine deck covered for protection, and the pool was filled.

  6. ✓

    Finished

The finished pool and water feature

Finished, the tiled water feature spills into the pool, and the travertine deck fills the space between the house and the block walls. Proof that a custom pool can fit an established Tucson yard.
