Gladden Farms Pool with Attached Spa, Paver Deck and Turf

A custom rectangular pool with a square spa built into one corner at deck level, for a wide, open Gladden Farms backyard in Marana. The project includes dark waterline tile, a light Artistic Pavers pool deck that runs from the covered patio to the water with an exposed aggregate border, and 82 oz artificial turf. It also has an in-floor cleaning system. This page follows the pool and spa build from layout paint to the finished backyard.

How we built this Gladden Farms pool and spa

Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.

01
Step 1 of 6
Pool and spa layout and excavation in Gladden Farms
We marked the pool and the attached spa in orange paint on the bare Gladden Farms lot, then dug both with our own excavator. Owning our excavation equipment lets us set the dig date instead of waiting on a rental company, and it means the operator digging your pool works for us.
02
Step 2 of 6
Plumbing and rebar for the pool and attached spa
Plumbing went in first: the main drain, returns, skimmer and the spa jet lines. Then our crew tied a steel rebar cage through the pool and around the spa, built to the engineered plans. The spa sits inside the same steel cage as the pool, so the pool and spa are one connected concrete structure. This pool has an in-floor cleaning system. You can see the extra pipes peeking up through the floor steel: each one becomes a pop-up cleaning head that pushes dirt toward the main drain, so the pool does most of its own cleaning in the dusty Tucson monsoon.
03
Step 3 of 6
Shotcrete shell for the pool and corner spa
Shotcrete formed the pool walls, the entry steps and the spa in a single shell. In the photo you can see the spa walls rising in the corner of the pool with their own steps, before any tile or finish.
04
Step 4 of 6
Dark waterline tile
Dark waterline tile was set around the pool just below the coping. A dark tile line hides the waterline, holds up to Tucson hard water and frames the light interior finish.
05
Step 5 of 6
Paver pool deck from the covered patio
The Artistic Pavers pool deck went in from the covered patio out to the pool while the shell was still open, so the deck, coping and patio meet cleanly. A light paver color stays cooler under bare feet in the Marana summer.
06
Step 6 of 6
Interior finish on the pool and spa
Our crew applied the interior finish to the pool and spa in one day, with the new Artistic Pavers deck covered in plastic to protect it. The pool was filled right after.

Finished
The finished pool and attached spa
Finished, the spa sits flush in the corner of the pool, and turf fills the space between the covered patio and the water. It is a family-friendly pool and spa layout that fits a newer Gladden Farms lot.
