How we built this Marana pool, raised spa and fire trough
Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.

Step 1 of 4
Pool layout on a Marana gravel lot
Every Meraki pool starts with layout paint. We marked the pool and raised spa outline on the gravel yard so the homeowner could stand in the backyard and see the real size, the spa location and the walking space around it before any digging started. Changes are easy at this stage and cost nothing.

Step 2 of 4
Pool plumbing trench and rebar for the pool and spa
Next, our crew ran the pool plumbing. Lines for the main drain, returns, skimmer and spa jets were bundled and laid in a trench back to the equipment pad, then we tied the steel rebar for the pool floor, walls and the raised spa to the engineered plans. Every plumbing stub is set inside the steel before the shotcrete, so nothing has to be cut in later. This pool has an in-floor cleaning system. You can see the extra pipes peeking up through the floor steel: each one becomes a pop-up cleaning head that pushes dirt toward the main drain, so the pool does most of its own cleaning in the dusty Tucson monsoon.

Step 3 of 4
Building the raised spa and setting dark glass tile
With the shotcrete shell in place, we built up the raised spa wall above the pool and covered its face in dark glass tile. Glass tile holds its color in the Arizona sun and turns the spa into a clean, dark block that frames the water. The pool steps and waterline were finished to match.

Step 4 of 4
Prepping the pool and spa for the interior finish
Before the interior finish, the pool and spa were cleaned, taped off and prepped, and the new deck was protected. The finish went on in one day and the pool was filled the same week.

Finished
The finished pool, raised spa and fire trough
The finished backyard pairs the dark-tiled raised spa with a linear fire trough at the edge of the deck, a light Artistic Pavers pool deck that stays cooler underfoot, and turf for the kids and pets. It is a modern pool design that works day and night in Marana.
