Fire and Water Pool with Outdoor Kitchen and Fire Pit in Marana, AZ

A complete backyard for a newer Marana home: a rectangular pool with a glass-tile raised wall and sheer descent, fire bowls on stacked travertine pillars, a travertine deck, a square travertine fire pit, a built-in grill island and turf. Our crew handled the excavation, steel, masonry and hardscape for the whole yard. It also has an in-floor cleaning system.

How we built this Marana fire and water backyard

Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 4

Pool layout and excavation in Marana

We painted the pool layout on the graded Marana lot, then dug the pool with our own equipment and set wood forms, including the stepped shallow end. A clean layout and forms keep the pool square and the steps where the design shows them.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 4

Rebar and plumbing for the pool and sheer descent

Rebar was tied along the walls and floor of the deep end, and plumbing for the returns and the sheer descent was laid in before the shell. Gas lines for the fire bowls were planned at the same time so nothing had to be trenched twice. This pool has an in-floor cleaning system. You can see the extra pipes peeking up through the floor steel: each one becomes a pop-up cleaning head that pushes dirt toward the main drain, so the pool does most of its own cleaning in the dusty Tucson monsoon.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 4

Travertine coping and the block raised wall

Travertine coping went on around the new shotcrete shell, and our masons built the block raised wall that later received the glass tile, the sheer descent and the stacked travertine pillars for the fire bowls.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 4

Travertine fire pit, BBQ island and patio

Our hardscape crew built the square travertine fire pit, the stacked-stone outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill and the travertine patio, so the whole backyard was finished together with the pool.

    Finished

The finished fire and water backyard

The finished backyard is built for evenings: a sheer descent between two lit fire bowls, a fire pit on the patio and the BBQ island a few steps from the pool.
