What happened
On September 17, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of about 4,600 Hayward Universal-HC Series pool heaters, model HDFS400. These are 400,000 BTU dual-fuel gas heaters. The CPSC says they can give off high levels of carbon monoxide while running, which can cause serious injury or death.
The heaters are brown with a black top and a digital control panel. They were sold nationwide through pool equipment distributors, builders and service companies from March 2026 through July 2026 for about $5,600. You can find the model number “HDFS400” at the top of the nameplate, below the vent. No incidents had been reported when the recall was announced. Owners should stop using the heater and contact Hayward for a free in-home inspection and repair.
The CPSC has also recalled several brands of pool and spa drain covers this year for failing federal entrapment safety standards. One example is the Sviyatp dual suction outlet cover, recalled July 23, 2026, which was sold on Amazon from March through June 2026. Most of these recalled covers were cheap replacement parts sold online.
What this means for your pool
Heating season is close in Tucson. Many owners fire up their heaters in October and November to stretch swim season or warm the spa, so now is a good time to check.
- Read the heater nameplate. If you replaced or added a gas heater this year, look for the model number before you turn it on. If it says HDFS400, do not run it until Hayward has inspected it.
- Think about where exhaust goes. Even a working gas heater should vent away from windows, doors and covered patios. A carbon monoxide alarm inside the home is a smart backup for any gas appliance.
- Check every drain cover. Look at the main drain and spa suction covers for cracks, missing screws or fading. Many covers are marked with a service life. Old or broken covers should be replaced right away.
- Buy replacement parts with care. A cover that looks right is not always certified. Use parts made for your pool’s drain and suction fittings, and check the CPSC recall list if you bought a cover online.
- Keep the spa safe. Spas have strong suction and hot water. Teach kids to stay away from drains and to keep long hair up.

Questions pool owners are asking
Which pool heater was recalled in September 2026?
The Hayward HDFS400 Universal-HC Series 400,000 BTU dual-fuel gas pool heater. About 4,600 units sold from March 2026 through July 2026 are included. The model number is printed at the top of the nameplate below the vent.
What should I do if I have the recalled Hayward heater?
Stop using it right away and contact Hayward to set up a free in-home inspection and repair. The CPSC notice lists 855-500-5288 and hayward.com/productrecall.
Why do drain covers get recalled?
Drain covers must meet federal entrapment protection standards under the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. Covers that fail those standards can trap hair, limbs or bodies against the drain's suction, which can lead to drowning.
