How we built this freeform pool in a compact Marana yard
Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.
- 01
Step 1 of 5
Freeform pool excavation in a compact yard
We outlined the freeform shape with bendable forms and dug it with a compact excavator that fits through a side yard. Smaller yards need a smaller machine and a crew that plans every move.
- 02
Step 2 of 5
Shotcrete shell with bench seating and steps
The shotcrete shell formed the curved walls, a bench seat and the entry steps, so the pool has places to sit and an easy way in.
- 03
Step 3 of 5
Gray paver coping
Gray Artistic Pavers coping was set around the curves of the shell before the interior finish, giving the pool a clean, modern edge.
- 04
Step 4 of 5
Herringbone paver patio
Pavers were laid in a herringbone pattern under the covered patio and around the pool, a strong pattern that holds up to foot traffic.
- 05
Step 5 of 5
Interior finish and first fill
The light interior finish went on and the pool was filled, framed by the Artistic Pavers coping and patio.

Finished
The finished freeform pool
Even a year after the build, the pool still looks sharp, with the gray Artistic Pavers deck and block walls around it.
