How we built this freeform pool in Marana

Every photo is from this one project, in the order it was built. Tap any photo to see it full size.

  1. 01

    Step 1 of 6

    Freeform pool excavation

We dug the curved freeform shape with a mini excavator inside forms bent to follow the design. Freeform pools take more care at this stage, because every curve on the plan has to show up in the ground.

  2. 02

    Step 2 of 6

Rebar for a curved pool shape

A rebar grid was tied across the floor and up the curved walls, following the freeform shape so the shell is strong all the way around. This pool has an in-floor cleaning system. You can see the extra pipes peeking up through the floor steel: each one becomes a pop-up cleaning head that pushes dirt toward the main drain, so the pool does most of its own cleaning in the dusty Tucson monsoon.

  3. 03

    Step 3 of 6

Shotcrete shell and patterned tile band

The shotcrete shell formed the curves, and the patterned tile band was set along the waterline.

  4. 04

    Step 4 of 6

    Patterned waterline tile

The blue-and-white patterned tile gives this pool its personality. It is set right below the coping so it frames the water and shows from the patio.

  5. 05

    Step 5 of 6

Travertine deck to the covered patio

Travertine was laid around the pool and out to the covered patio, a cool, natural stone that suits the curves of a freeform pool.

  6. 06

    Step 6 of 6

    Interior finish

The light interior finish went on, with travertine coping curving along the edge, ready to fill.
